The facility, which has created up to 200 jobs, was opened by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and will help to maintain Ryanair’s 260 strong fleet of aircraft.
The client required hangar flooring that would protect its state-of-the art aviation vehicles and Flowcrete UK was the perfect choice. The resin flooring specialists manufacture industrial floor coatings that offer the necessary chemical, impact, wear and fire resistance requirements for large-scale hangar facilities.
The first step was to shot blast the concrete substrate to remove surface laitance and create a better bond between the floor elements. Then 5000m2 of Hydraseal DPM, a damp proof membrane, was applied to control residual construction moisture and allow for the early installation of moisture sensitive floor finishes. This was imperative as the construction moisture within the slab was above 75% RH (Relative Humidity).
A 5000m2 finishing coat of Flowcoat SF41 topped with Flowcoat SK was then applied to help withstand the corrosive effects of substances such as Skydrol aviation fluid and MEK in the hangar environment. These systems can also enhance safety underfoot by providing an anti-slip finish.
Flowcrete UK and its licensed applicators completed the work over just four weeks throughout July and August 2010.
