Oldest State School is First in UK to use New Screed Solution

One of the oldest state schools in the country became the first UK project to use Flowcrete UK’s new innovation, Isocrete Bagged K-Screed.

The 336 year old John Roan School in Greenwich installed the screed in a new, state-of-the-art building as well as in an existing facility that was being redeveloped.

Through the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme the school secured funding for a new 7,500m² building which is due to open in September 2014. Isocrete Bagged K-Screed was specified for 6,500m² of the floor area under development.

A popular choice with architects, Isocrete K-Screed contains a plasticising and accelerating fibre additive that enhances the performance of sand/cement based screeds. This admixture speeds up programme times and allows for foot traffic on site much sooner than alternative solutions. It is also very hard wearing and has a low shrinkage formulation that minimises the risk of cracking.

The new Bagged version retains the qualities of K-Screed but has been pre-blended at the manufacturing stage to ensure the correct number of fibres is added to the mixture. This adds an extra control measure into the process and removes the risk of the screed being incorrectly mixed on site.

Stephen Bird, Flowcrete's Southern Area Manager said: “The Bagged K-Screed system out stretched all expectations with strength gain, cleanliness on site and ease of installation, making the whole project faster, cleaner and far more efficient. The constructors and applicators were both very pleased with the results."
