Glenfiddich Distillery Walks its Way to Success

Owned by the Grant family since 1886, Glenfiddich’s award winning distillery is one of the few to remain entirely family owned in the United Kingdom.

With visitors coming from all over the world to experience Glenfiddich’s award winning whiskies, William Grant & Sons Distillers Ltd. appointed Flowcrete UK to improve its ‘Visitor Tour Experience’ by refurbishing its bare concrete external walkways with aesthetically pleasing zones that would reflect the beauty of the surroundings.

In order to achieve this, Flowcrete supplied 200 m2 of its seamless and slip-resistant bonded gravel system Naturewalk Rapide. This system consists of natural stone aggregates scattered into a solvent free, methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin binder and is designed to ensure that walkways and external concourse areas reflect the natural aesthetics of the outdoors.

Ideal for Glenfiddich’s outdoor environment, the Naturewalk Rapide not only offers a more durable alternative to loose stone or gravel, it’s also easier to maintain than paving stones or decking tiles and produces a seamless, textured and safe anti-slip resin finish – perfect for the distillery’s external walkways that are subject to heavy footfall and wet weather conditions. The system also eliminates any cracks where weeds can grow and dirt can dwell.

A special moisture tolerant primer was applied on the existing concrete to suppress the moisture within. An additional primer that incorporates glass fibre reinforcement was then used over any cracks prior to the application of a flexible binder, grey Guyanan aggregates were then broadcast over the floor before the finish was completed with sealers.

As the main tourist walkway it was crucial that the path was back up and running as quickly as possible. The fast curing nature of Naturewalk Rapide meant that the walkway was ready for the distillery to use again within just one week.
