Flowcrete UK Extinguishes Floor Failures at Edinburgh Airport’s Fire Station

The fire station and training centre at Edinburgh Airport worked with Flowcrete UK to identify and install a floor finish that would be able to cope with the difficult on-site conditions.

A new floor was required as the previous quarry tile surface was incorrectly laid to a fall, this caused water to run in the wrong direction - ending up at the back of the building as well as ponding between the bays.

To rectify the situation the original finish was taken up and an Isopol SBR screed was installed with a fall that ran from the back of the appliance bay to the building’s front apron.

450mof Flowcrete UK’s solvent-free, polyurethane concrete system Flowfresh HF was applied as the floor finish. This solution solved the client’s requirement for a seamless surface that could be hosed down and easily maintained. It was also important that the finish had a slip resistant texture to enhance safety within a facility prone to wet floors.

The fire appliances used at the centre weigh around 33 tons, making them much heavier than the standard fire engine, which weighs around 12 to 18 tons. This meant that the floor needed to exhibit excellent abrasion resistance as well as the ability to dissipate heavy physical impacts, so as to ensure that it would not fail when faced with such large, heavy vehicles moving across the floor surface.
