The Broadway

The Broadway, Bradford’s new £260 million shopping centre built by the Westfield Corporation, was opened in November 2015 with the aim of regenerating the area, increasing footfall into the city and positioning Bradford as a major shopping destination for the region. 

Creating an effective car parking facility was central to the mall’s smooth operation. Its five level, 1,300-space parking facility has been designed to welcome visitors with a safe and pleasant environment, creating a great impression on arriving shoppers. 

Flowcrete UK supplied 8,000m² of Deckshield Rapide ED for the exposed top deck of The Broadway’s multi-storey parking facility. This fast curing deck coating material has been tailored to overcome the challenges that floors on exposed car park levels will face to ensure that the floor provides a reliable and attractive finish for the long term. 

Deckshield Rapide ED incorporates a methyl methacrylate (MMA) additive, which significantly speeds up the rate of cure in order to reduce the amount of time required to complete a flooring project. 

At the time of the installation a spell of cold weather meant that the MMA nature of this system was an added bonus, as many alternative deck-coating materials would have struggled to successfully cure in the low temperatures.

Westfield also had to take into account excessive deck movement during the flooring specification process, as otherwise it could have led to an early floor failure. An extra flexible membrane was chosen so that the building’s movement would not break the coating. 

Different colours were used to mark out the various areas of the car park. A light, clean grey was chosen for the road routes and a darker, urban grey was applied in the parking bays. Bright white line marking was used for the road signage to aid navigation and enhance onsite safety.
