Bespoke Floor Provided for The Blue Planet

A unique flooring system was created especially for the new National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet (The Blue Planet) to create an ultra light reflective floor that adds to the underwater illusion in the venue’s interior.

The aquarium in Copenhagen is the largest in Northern Europe and has already won awards for its innovative design, which includes a curving façade in the shape of a whirlpool, a 600 metre glass tunnel and glistening floors.

An important design factor of the building is to make visitors feel immersed in a marine world, with an important part of this effect being the swirling, watery lights that shimmer on the floor’s surface.

This necessitated a smooth, light reflective floor that Flowcrete Sweden created by installing several of its solutions using unique application techniques. The finished floor also had to be sufficiently strong and abrasion resistant, so as to withstand continual foot traffic from an anticipated 800,000 annual visitors.

6,600m² of Flowcrete solutions were used during the project, with Flowcoat TL, Flowseal EPW and Peran WW being installed in concourse areas, technical rooms and stairwells.

This combination of systems created a level, seamless, anti-slip floor finish with a crisp colour that matched the aesthetics of the building and which would be able to retain its appearance and functionality in the face of heavy use. These solutions are also a hygienic but low maintenance choice, as dirt can be easily removed from the surface and won’t be caught in cracks in the floor.
